Three years ago, on September 1st, 2022, the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) launched its Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa program, a landmark initiative that has attracted wealthy global citizens, investors, retirees, and experts.
By attracting investment and knowhow, the 10-year renewable visa program has strengthened Thailand’s position as a strategic hub for investment and talent in Asia, while offering long-term stability and competitive privileges to qualified foreign residents.
The LTR allows eligible affluent investors and skilled professionals in high-value industries to enjoy multiple-entry privileges, digital work permits, tax incentives, and streamlined immigration services designed to international standards.
"The LTR Visa reflects Thailand’s vision to welcome global talent and investment that support our industries of the future,” said Mr. Narit Therdsteerasukdi, Secretary General of the BOI. "Three years on, the program has proven its impact both in strengthening competitiveness and in delivering measurable returns to the economy, making the program a genuine win–win.”
Strong Economic Contribution
According to BOI data, the LTR program has generated a total economic impact of 23 billion baht (USD 651 million) in its first three years. This impact comes from four main channels: more than 13.2 billion baht in direct spending by visa holders, nearly 8.1 billion baht in investment from visa holders in the Wealthy Global Citizens and Wealthy Pensioners categories, over 351 million baht collected in visa fees, and over 800 million baht in personal income tax contributed by highly-skilled professionals.
Since the simplification of requirements in January 2025—particularly for the Highly Skilled Professionals and Wealthy Global Citizen categories, which broadened their eligibilities—the visa program has seen a notable increase in applications.
Located at One Bangkok, the new Thailand Investment and Expat Services Center (TIESC) now consolidates visa endorsement, digital work permits, annual reporting, and investment facilitation under one roof, with modern facilities designed to provide efficient, seamless service to investors and expatriates. Looking forward, the BOI will continue to enhance the LTR program through digitalized applications, expanded tax incentives, and sector-specific residency tracks, reaffirming Thailand’s commitment to becoming a premier global destination for talent and investment.
